NYU film school is the film program offered by The Tisch School of the Arts, one of the 15 schools part of the New York University, most commonly referred to as NYU.
The NYU film school is probably the most selective film school in the world, as it accepts only a small part of the candidates, something like 3% of the people applying.
Located on the island of Manhattan in New York City, NYU film school offers both advantages and disadvantages. On the one hand, going to school in a place like New York City provides everything you need. Restaurants, cafes, famous location or personalities are all over the place, so finding inspiration for your work should not be a problem. On the other hand, you miss out on the actual experience a real close campus has to offer. Not much of a waste though, as you have the chance to live and study in one of the greatest cities in the world. Another disadvantage might be if you wanted to get out of the city to shoot or just to chill out away from all the crazy action going on. There’s no way to keep a car without becoming bankrupt, but the subways and the trains will get you anywhere you want to go at a pretty affordable cost. So the NYU film school is located in a great environment for film-making, providing multiple opportunities all waiting to be revealed.
NYU film school’s curriculum includes classes in all the important categories of film-making, like:
- editing
- writing
- sound
- television technology
It also features classes where you team up with your classmates to work on films together. At first the tasks might be pretty simple, like short videos for example, but as you advance through the program the projects will become more complex. At that point you can choose between experimental films or narrative films. Keep in mind that the school will provide you only the basic equipment. If you want to do something more complex you will have to fund it yourself. Generally, any student can direct his own films with the help of the other students, as actors or crew members. The NYU film school will supply you with a good selection of equipment. It might not be all the latest technology, but at least u won’t be lacking anything crucial.
The professors at NYU film school are all working professionals, some more achieving than others. In some classes you have guest lecturers and if you’re lucky you might get the chance to be in the same classroom with Woody Allen or some other famous alumni, people who occasionally teach classes to share their enormous knowledge and talent. Also the school hosts weekly screenings where the directors or producers will attend and talk about how their films were made or what lies behind the closed doors of a set. These are great opportunities for a student to make some contacts in the business, as successful graduates and famous alumni are usually present at those screenings.
All in all, the NYU film school could be a great launching point for anybody willing to go through the process. Make sure it’s the right choice for you and you just might become the next Brad Pitt.
