More INFO on the Short Film School DVD www.tlapro.com Learn what makes great looking images in film, music videos etc. It’s not always the camera but how you design the shots. In this 4th tutorial I try to explain how I use the exact same setup I used in the previous tutorial for a different scene from the same film. To buy this film on DVD please go to www.tlapro.com The comedic duo that you see in this clip are actually the members of Nocturnal Emissions Comedy… hillarious guys! WUT?? DROPPED HIS PANTS??
I have a normal homevideo HD camera I think it’s called a DXG-595V would it be possible to connect a microphone like a singing mic through to one of those using a special cord which I have, and kind of have that as a boom mic replacement
your best light in here was exterior lighting with the girl who was wearing yellow clothes, what did you do to get this lighting outside ? Or was it just sunlight ?

Well Thanks again you are really a helpfull person!!
@inanimaniak Nope… i never use noise reduction… slight noise is okay. Nobody will notice the noise specialy if the shots look interesting. As for exposure i NEVER use the built in light meter, unless Im shooting a scene that is entirely gray. Cuz the light meter exposes shots to the mid range gray… so in a scene with a lot of contrast it doesnt know what to expose properly. So instead I judge by eye and by using the histogram. You can see how I get the perfect exposure in my EXPOSURE tut
Hey thanks for the tip. anyway do you use anykind of noise reduction in post, since an ISO at 1600 will get some noise in the picture? what about the exposure meter in the camera, do you rely on it to get the intended exposure (normaly on 0) or do you use it below or above the 0 mark? Thanks and keep going with your filmmaking tips because they are really helpfull!
@inanimaniak Thnx! With the 7D I found ISO 1600 is the max… but if I do go to 1600 then I still make sure there is enough light to get a properly lit image at that speed. As for the aperture f1.8 is the lowest I use, beyond that the DOF is so narrow it’s hard to keep things in focus unless you’re doing a still shot.
Nice cinematography there!
Two questions:
how far do you go with ISO of the camera without getting noise in the image?
whats the maximum aperture you use for low light situations (f1.4? f2?)
Good material here. Thanks for sharing. I just did a series on 5D Filmmaking. Cheers!!!

Great tutorial! I’m new in this domain. I can edit my “movies” with Sony Vegas? It’s good for something?
Great stuff. I love how simple you make it. I am getting ready to do a music video and your tips will come in very handy. That 500 watt light seems to do the trick on lots of sceens. Your video instructions will help many folks. Thanks so much
Fantastic stuff! This is very engaging because it’s not just about lighting etc, in a studio, but has a context – you explain your choices and what (in the real world) influenced them. That’s much more useful – I’m about to do an outdoor shoot with an actor and this will all be really useful in helping me plan it. Thanks for all the work you’ve done in sharing this. Top stuff.
